A lot has happened for Google Chrome since the day we prematurely shipped our comic book, announced Google Chrome just a day before we initially intended, and pushed our browser out of the nest and into Beta. To take stock of this past year, we thought we'd celebrate with a birthday cake, birthday balloons, and a few interesting factoids. Since September 2, 2008, there have been:

51 developer releases, 21 beta releases or updates, and 15 stable releases or updates
Over 20,600 bugs filed (4367 of them were duplicates, 3505 have been fixed, which leaves a whole lot left to go!)
11 external committers and bug editors, 46 external code contributors
50 Chrome Experiments
26 posts on the Google Chrome blog
12 Chrome Shorts, a collection of short films about Google Chrome
A sequel to the comic in Japanese

More importantly, we've improved by over 150% on Javascript performance since our initial beta:

We've also added some of the most commonly requested features -- including form autofill, side-by-side view, the ability to remove items from the New Tab page, and full screen mode (just hit F11!) -- and even a bit of magic to make the entire web three-dimensional (okay, that was just a joke).

There's still plenty for us to do. Extensions for Google Chrome are well underway. We're also hard at work on Google Chrome for Mac and Linux, which are making rapid progress on the developer channel. Our Mac and Linux versions are missing a few key features (such as printing), so we're keeping them in the developer channel a little while longer to make sure that they provide a satisfying native experience on these platforms and meet our standards for stability and performance. If you like living on the cutting edge and don't mind the work in progress, you can download Google Chrome for Mac and Linux today through the developer channel.

Before we blow out the candles on Google Chrome's first birthday, we'd like to send a huge thank you to all our users who browse the web with Google Chrome, provide great feedback, and shared your all-round awesomeness with us. Chrome Ad in the New York Times

Google bought a large expandable ad in the online edition of the New York Times to promote Google Chrome. The ad lets you play the 11 Chrome-related short films recently uploaded at YouTube.


Here are some of the reactions on Twitter:

patrickbeeson: "Saw a monster ad for Google Chrome on the front of nytimes.com this morning."

jlopezvalcarcel: "Google bought a display ad on NYTimes.com for Chrome. Quality content wins the day. Automated algorithms can only take you so far."

sydneyskybetter: "If an ad for Google's Chrome browser is going to take up 80% of NYTimes.com, the least they could do is offer a version for mac."

Google Chrome is the most advertised Google product: you'll often see it promoted on Google's homepage, on YouTube, LinkedIn and other places. Word of mouth worked well for Google's search engine, but it's probably not enough to make you change your browser, especially when you don't even know what a browser is or when you think that the Internet is a blue icon on your desktop.

Vai entender essas coincidências da vida… Há _exatamente_ um ano, publicamos aqui no MacMagazine um vídeo de um usuário que havia colocado 50 aplicativos para rodar simultaneamente no Mac OS X.
Hoje, o Gizmodo registrou um novo recorde para a façanha: 200 programas rodando ao mesmo tempo num iMac de 20 polegadas, com um processador Intel Core 2 Duo de 2,4GHz e 4GB de RAM. Segundo eles, a máquina demorou 15 minutos para terminar de abrir tudo e mais uns 15 pra colocar todas as janelas em modo Exposé:

O leitor que enviou a imagem disse ainda que conseguiu conversar via videoconferência enquanto os aplicativos eram abertos, ainda que a imagem tenha congelado de vez em quando por alguns segundos. E fez uma descoberta: o Dock não mostra mais de 100 ícones de uma vez só. :-P
Eu acho que não tenho nem perto de 200 aplicativos na minha máquina pra fazer um teste desses…

A deep dive into the ocean in Google Earth

Three years ago, I met Google Earth and Maps Director John Hanke at a conference in Spain, and had a chance publicly to say how much I love Google Earth. "My children, my grandchildren think it is great to see their backyard, fly through the Grand Canyon, visit other countries," I said. "But, John, when are you going to finish it? You should call Google Earth 'Google Dirt'. What about the ¾ of the planet that is blue?"

That fateful conversation led to a team of Googlers coming together to make Google Earth complete. We enlisted the U. S. Navy, NOAA, NASA, the National Geographic, BBC and numerous ocean institutions and organizations, coordinated by DOER Marine Operations. I chaired a Council of Advisors including dozens of scientists, who weighed in on how to bring together information about 97% of the biosphere and make it accessible to the world on Google Earth. Today, our efforts have paid off with the launch of Ocean in the new Google Earth 5.0. Everyone, from little kids to serious scientists, desk-bound executives and policymakers to far-flung field explorers – all now have new ways of looking at the world. The whole world.

I have been exploring the ocean as a scientist since the 1950s, and have tried every way I know how to explain what I see and convey to others the profound sense of urgency I feel about the changes that are taking place. I have tried with talks, films, interviews, magazine stories, and books to show that the ocean is fundamental to human prosperity, health, security, and the existence of life itself. And I have tried to alert the world to what I have come to understand. The ocean is in trouble, and therefore, so are we.

Now, with the new version of Google Earth, people can see within a few hours what it has taken me a lifetime to understand. Anyone can fly to Hawaii vicariously and see the real Hawaiian islands, not just the mountain tops that poke through the ocean's surface. You can swim with whales, inspect coral reefs, or see the impacts of destructive fishing. Anyone now can slip into the sea and find hundreds of images of creatures and see them on their own terms, underwater. Now, you can dive to the deepest place in the ocean, the Mariana Trench, where only two people have ever actually been – in 1960.

Open the "Ocean" folder in the Layers panel to explore the 20 content layers from over 100 partners. Double click on the "Explore the Ocean" layer and it will fly you to my Ocean Overview video and ten focus areas with National Geographic video clips. Other layers include dynamic sea surface temperature, Census of Marine Life data, Marine Protected Areas, shipwrecks, dive and surf sites, Arkive images, Planet Earth footage from the BBC, and much more. You can even visit a 3D model of the undersea laboratory Aquarius and fly to the Titanic and follow the expedition that discovered it.

The launching of the Ocean in Google Earth has instilled in me a new sense of optimism and hope because it provides, in a stroke, a whole new way of understanding the nature of the world and our place in it. Knowing is the key. With knowing comes caring, and with caring there is hope that we can – and will —find an enduring place for ourselves within the mostly blue planet that sustains us.
